I first met the founders of Mero during HARDWARE.co in Germany back in 2017, and we stayed connected over the years. After exiting my previous startups, I reached out to see if they were looking for someone with a founder background comfortable operating across engineering, infrastructure, product, and operations in a lean startup environment.
Led a major infrastructure modernization initiative focused on reducing vendor lock-in, simplifying operations, and improving platform reliability.
Key work included:
- Migrating infrastructure from AWS/ECS to DigitalOcean/Kubernetes
- Moving from StatsD and proprietary RUM tooling to OpenTelemetry instrumentation
- Replacing Datadog and Mixpanel workflows with SigNoz and PostHog
- Reorganizing Terraform infrastructure into reusable layered modules and safer deployment processes
- Standardizing CI/CD workflows across microservices using reusable GitHub Actions composite actions maintained in an internal actions repository
Planned and executed the production migration with less than 2 hours of user-facing downtime, uninterrupted sensor traffic, and no sensor data loss — while reducing infrastructure costs by more than 50%.
Real-Time IoT Processing & Operational Intelligence
Working on scaling and improving the reliability of Mero’s real-time IoT event processing systems across customer locations in North America.
Major areas included:
- Improving device responsiveness and online/offline synchronization
- Ingestion lag monitoring and scaling for high-throughput IoT pipelines
- Kafka partitioning and worker scaling strategies while preserving ordered event processing guarantees
- Beacon abandonment detection and “data watermarking” systems for downstream data reliability
- Team-based task completion algorithms with frequency and minimum-gap constraints
- SQL, backend, and large-scale event pipeline performance optimizations
- Data backfills, integrity verification, and production incident response
- Participating in pager-duty rotations and handling IoT traffic surges
Built a metrics-based analytics platform for exploring operational data across buildings, teams, cleaners, floors, and locations.
Key contributions included:
- Designing analytics data models and aggregation workflows
- Building metrics exploration and segmentation capabilities
- Optimizing PostgreSQL-based analytics architecture without introducing a dedicated OLAP system
- Using lightweight metadata/tag tables and aggregation tables to avoid expensive joins on large datasets
- Building cron-based computation and backfill workflows for recomputing analytics data
- Scaling analytics workflows for enterprise customers operating across 20+ buildings
Analytics Studio
Built a self-serve analytics studio using Metabase’s embedding SDK, allowing customers to create custom dashboards and explore raw operational data independently.
Key areas included:
- Embedded analytics workflows using the Metabase SDK
- Tenant isolation and access control on shared infrastructure
- Secure dashboard and query access across customer accounts
- Customer-facing dashboard customization workflows
Mero Score
Worked on a KPI-driven operational scoring system designed to measure cleaning performance across customer facilities.
This included:
- Designing scoring logic and KPI computation workflows
- Building reporting pipelines and operational recommendations
- Surfacing trends and factors negatively affecting customer scores
AI Features
Built AI-assisted customer workflows including operational summary reports and a conversational analytics MVP.
This included:
- AI-generated weekly operational summary reports
- Trend and anomaly detection summaries
- Product usage insights and recommendations
- An AI chat MVP for querying operational and analytics data
- Structured responses, knowledge base integration, and custom widget-based interactions
The AI systems were implemented using the Vercel AI SDK.
Billing, Imports & Product Access
Built and improved customer-facing onboarding, billing, and product access systems.
This included:
- Stripe subscription and billing workflows
- Auto-charge and invoice-based subscriptions
- Billing-aware product access controls and paywall enforcement
- Seat-based billing capabilities
- Self-serve CSV import systems with validation, mapping, and spreadsheet editing workflows
- Dynamic import flows based on roles and feature access
